(Archives) Last update - 17:03 19/05/2008 Pensioners MKs who jumped ship delay joining Gaydamak party By Shahar Ilan, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: Moshe Sharoni  MKs who decided to tear away from the Pensioners Party and join tycoon Arcadi Gaydamak's party have delayed the move, after lawmakers criticized the deal they signed with Gaydamak. Several MKs lashed out against the deal saying it was illegal and unethical for Gaydamak to "buy" the Knesset seats of the three MKs who were voted into the parliament to represent the Pensioners Party's platform and not the views of Gaydamak. MK Moshe Sharoni, who led the move that brought two other Pensioner MKs to defect to Gaydamak's "Social Justice" party, rescinded the signed agreement and agreed to make corrections in the document before presenting it to the Knesset for approval once more. Advertisement During the Knesset hearing on the issue, Meretz MK Zahava Gal-On said that "this is the long arm of the underworld that's trying to buy MKs." Labor MK Shelly Yachimovich said that "the agreement is the most blatantly criminal deal I have ever seen." On the other hand, Likud MK Gideon Sa'ar said that preventing the party split would be a problematic precedence. "We are trapping two MKs together after one called the other Caligula and Ceausescu." Hadash Chair MK Mohammed Barakeh suggested delaying the vote until after the allegations of the agreement's illegality are examined. Knesset Legal Adviser Nurit Altstein ruled that the Knesset committee has the authorization to block the party's division if it chooses to do so, this in contrast with the opposition's assertion that the split within the party is a technical move that cannot be denied.
