Police probe possible gang rape of disabled woman
By Jonathan Lis

Jerusalem police are investigating the possibility that a 27-year-old mentally disabled woman was gang-raped by nine men 10 days ago. It is further suspected that she was raped on two additional occasions in recent days by a total of 14 men.

The first gang rape allegedly occured the day after Independence Day, at the apartment of a man named Itamar Nadav, in Jerusalem's Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood.

The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court yesterday extended Nadav's remand by five days. There are plans to arrest the other suspects in the coming days, including four men who are soldiers.

Police believe that Nadav had met the woman recently. He claims he was unaware of her disability, that a friendship developed and soon included sex.

Police are investigating at least three separate incidents in which Nadav and his friends allegedly had exploitative sex with the woman.

The woman recently filed a police complaint alleging that on the day after Independence Day, she was held at Nadav's apartment against her will, prevented from using her mobile phone and raped. She says that on another occasion, she was allegedly raped in the presence of two women friends, wards of the same institution in which she resides.

Police sources say that in his interrogation, Nadav did not deny his involvement in the incidents, but claimed everything was consensual.

His lawyer, Ariel Atari, claimed at yesterday's remand hearing that the complainant tricked Nadav and his friends, and that it was she who initiated sexual relations with them. Atari even presented to the court a blatantly salacious text message the complainant sent to Nadav's mobile phone, in which she wrote - among other things - that she enjoyed having sex with him.

Atari also told the court that the complainant introduced herself to Nadav while using a false name, telephoned him many times to schedule a date, and repeated that he did not notice the women in question was mentally challenged.

The police representative presented the court with a psychiatric opinion concerning the woman's mental state, and added that her disability apparently precludes realization of the import of her actions.
