IDF removes W. Bank roadblock, first in series of gestures
By Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent

Israel Defense Forces troops on Saturday night removed a roadblock in the West Bank's South Hebron Hills area.

The move, which Defense Minister Ehud Barak had promised U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the Quartet special Mideast envoy Tony Blair, allows a free flow of Palestinian people and goods between Hebron and the village of Yata.

Simultaneously, dozens of "dirt mound" roadblocks have been scrapped across the West Bank to live up to Barak's commitments, defense officials said.

Last week, Blair unveiled an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, which includes a series of moves aimed at improving the lives of the Palestinians, the first of which was the removal of "the sheep roadblock."

The Shavei Shomron, Mehola and Halhul roadblocks are to follow, alongside the Beit El roadblock which will be relocated to facilitate movement into and from Ramallah.
