Min. Dichter says considering bid for Kadima leadership

Public Security Minister Avi Dichter has said that he is considering running for the leadership of Kadima.

Dichter said he would announce his final decision when he has fully developed his position on the matter, making the comments in an interview with Israel Radio aired Saturday.

His remarks came amid a widening criminal investigation into Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who heads Kadima.

The minister told Israel Radio that he could not comment on the probe, but stated that he completely trusts the judgment of the police, the state prosecution and the attorney general.

Dichter stated that he did not know whether the investigation would result in an indictment being filed against the prime minister. Olmert has said he will resign if indicted.

On Friday, several Kadima MKs gathered at the home of MK Isaac Ben-Israel to discuss the ongoing investigation against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

This is the first meeting of this kind since the news first broke regarding Olmert's probe, but the participants maintain that the nature of the meeting is merely a "theoretical discussion" and not an attempted putsch.

None of the senior members of the party was present at the meeting, although Ben-Israel is said to have invited many more MKs. Apparently some MKs chose to refrain, from fear the meeting might be interpreted as an attempt to oust Olmert.

No public figure from Kadima has publicly denounced the prime minister since the latest investigation against him came to light. However, recent comments made by Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni regarding the importance of having "a moral spine and inner compass" were believed to be directed at Olmert.
