Peres: Conference 'promoted Israel around the world'
By Anshel Pfeffer

President Shimon Peres expressed satisfaction Thursday as he summed up the three days of his "Facing Tomorrow" conference in Jerusalem: "It was an amazing thing whose like has never been seen before - and not only in Israel."

Next week, teams will summarize the conference discussions and draft position papers to give the government and international Jewish organizations. Peres rejected press criticism of the prestigious conference as being alienated from the Israeli reality. "I don't know what the media are talking about," Peres told Haaretz. "I saw what happened at the conference. Thirty-five panels with the world's leading speakers, including the number-one statesman, Henry Kissinger; the number-one philosopher, Bernard-Henri Levy; Elie Wiesel; economist Abby Joseph Cohen. I know of no conference where you could hear all of them together."

Peres sees the conference's success, above all, in the image boost he said it gave the state. "Look how much China is investing in holding the Olympics in order to promote itself worldwide," he said. "This conference was an intellectual Olympics and promoted Israel around the world."

Peres also praised the value of the networking that went on at the conference, noting that on the last day, two new projects were announced: a Jerusalem school for technological leadership, to be established in cooperation with media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., and a joint effort by several key donors to have important Jewish works translated into various languages and made available on the Internet.
