News in Brief

Eleven Jewish teenagers from Jerusalem were indicted yesterday on charges of assaulting two Arab teens on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

According to the charge sheet, submitted to the Jerusalem District Court, a message was circulated on May 1 urging Jews to congregate near a fast food restaurant in the capital's Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood at 10 P.M., in order to "put an end to all the Arabs who congregate [there]." Dozens of teens answered the call and attacked two Arabs who were walking down the street, beating one with clubs until he lost consciousness and stabbing the other repeatedly in the back. Both victims required medical treatment, and one was hospitalized for five days. (Ofra Edelman)

Industry Minister Eli Yishai decided yesterday to freeze a planned expansion of the "Wisconsin" welfare-to-work program until the end of 2009, thereby acceding to demands made by employees of the Government Employment Service.

In response, the employees stopped the labor sanctions they began two weeks ago.

The workers had charged that the planned expansion would result in layoffs, because more people using the Wisconsin Program's privately-run job placement service would mean fewer using the government service.

The Wisconsin program was introduced in four cities on a trial basis three years ago, and just three months ago, Yishai agreed to expand it nationwide. Finance Ministry officials were outraged at Yishai's about-face. (Ruth Sinai)

Major General Ido Nehushtan will take command of the Israel Air Force today, replacing Major General Elyezer Shkedy. Until now, Nehushtan has served as head of the Israel Defense Force's Plans and Policy Directorate.

His challenges as the IAF's new chief will range from integrating the new F-35 fighters that Israel is slated to receive from the United States to expanding the IAF's use of pilotless drones. (Yuval Azoulay)
