Fuel shortage closes Gaza's only power plant By Avi Issacharoff Tags: Israel, Gaza Strip  Gaza's only power plant has been shut down since Saturday afternoon due to a lack of fuel, and the Strip's bakeries announced Sunday that they would shut down as well because of a lack of fuel to run their ovens. As a result of the power plant's shutdown, almost a third of Gaza's residents are without electricity. Israel has not transferred fuel to Gaza since last Wednesday, just before the Independence Day holiday began. Enough diesel to operate the power plant was supposed to have been transferred yesterday, but the government decided to keep the border crossings closed, apparently in response to several recent attacks from Gaza on border communities in Israel, one of which killed an Israeli civilian. Fuel transfers, however, are supposed to resume Monday. Advertisement The power plant produces some 60 megawatts of electricity. An additional 141 megawatts are supplied to Gaza by Israel and Egypt. Also yesterday, a Hamas operative was killed before dawn while attempting to plant explosives near the Gaza-Israel border fence.
