News in Brief

Junior university faculty will disrupt studies today, their opening salvo in a campaign to protest employment terms for adjunct instructors. At Tel Aviv University today there will be an informational assembly from 12-2 P.M., as well as a demonstration. At the University of Haifa tomorrow meetings will be held instead of classes between 12-2 P.M. Junior faculty, who are responsible for a large share of courses and discussion sections, are employed as "adjuncts" at an hourly wage, and let go after eight months. These instructors are not entitled to social or academic benefits. (Ofri Ilani)

The appeals committee on implementing the Nazi Persecution Law set a precedent yesterday when it ruled that anyone who lived under curfew conditions in Romania and Bulgaria beginning in 1941, even if they were not sent to concentration and death camps, is considered a survivor for the purposes of receiving compensation. The landmark decision has the force of a district court ruling, and is expected to impact thousands of Jews from these two countries. The issue of designating survivors has been at the center of the controversy over compensation payouts by the Israeli government. (Anshel Pfeffer)

The Tourism Ministry is working to open Ben-Gurion International Airport to nighttime departures, to meet the anticipated increase in tourism traffic to and from Israel, the ministry's director general, Shaul Tzemach, said yesterday. Currently, there are no departures between 1:40 A.M. and 5:30 A.M., to prevent noise. Communities nearby have in the past objected to introducing nighttime departures. Ministry officials will bring the matter before the government soon, and intend to argue that airlines interested in operating at night would be required to use quieter planes. (Zohar Blumenkrantz)

Shmuel Katz, a key figure in the pre-state paramilitary organization Etzel and a Herut Party representative in the first Knesset, died this past weekend in Tel Aviv, at 93. Katz was born in South Africa and came to Palestine in 1936. He was a prolific writer - newspaper columnist, biographer, historian, and expert on Ze'ev Jabotinsky - whose best-known book is "Admat Meriva" (1973), an account of the roots of the Israeli-Arab conflict, the Palestinian refugee problem, and the rightful Jewish claim to the Land of Israel. The book is taught in schools worldwide, and has met with great acclaim, including from political rivals. (Nadav Shragai)

Jerusalem's local planning and construction committee yesterday approved plans for the controversial Mugrabi bridge near the Temple Mount, intended to provide access to the Mugrabi Gate in lieu of the ramp that collapsed in 2004. The plans are now in the hands of the district committee, which will meet in about a week to rediscuss objections by the Ir Amim nonprofit organization, Arab MKs, the Al-Aqsa foundation and archaeologist Meir Ben-Dov. The plan entails building a raised ramp supported by several columns, and will enlarge the women's section at the Western Wall plaza. (Nadav Shragai)

Four people hurt in the Independence Day air-show accident at Tel Aviv's Jerusalem Beach remain hospitalized at Sourasky Medical Center. A woman, 58, is in the intensive care unit suffering from multiple injuries. Hospital officials yesterday said her condition had stabilized. A man initially diagnosed with critical injuries has regained consciousness and been moved from ICU to the trauma ward. Another casualty is being treated in the same ward for light injuries.
