Jewish issues to take center stage at Peres conference
By Haaretz Service
Tags: Shimon Peres, George W. Bush

President Shimon Peres' conference next week in honor of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel has a strong Jewish agenda, with many of the internationally renowned guest speakers focusing on its traditions, culture and education.

A significant proportion of the debates at the three-day "Facing Tomorrow" conference, which begins on May 13, will tackle issues confronting the Jewish people today.

Among the panel debates on the agenda are the future of Jewish civilization, Jewish leadership, the role in religion in the Mideast conflict and the place of Diaspora Jewry in Israeli diplomatic decision-making.

The participants in the debates include Professors Alan Dershowitz of Harvard and Yehezkel Dror of the Hebrew University, former Shas leader and cabinet minister Arie Deri, and former U.S. ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer.

The conference will also be attended 11 current and former presidents from around the world, including U.S. President George W. Bush and former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. Other participants include former British prime minister Tony Blair, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, media magnate Rupert Murdoch and former U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger.
