Peruvian police arrest two suspected of murdering Israeli tourist

Peruvian police have arrested two youths on suspicion of murdering Tamar Shahak, a female Israeli tourist, a Peruvian newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The lifeless body of the 22-year-old was found on Sunday in the southern Peruvian city of Aricifa. Police reports had initially claimed that Shahak was strangled to death and had been raped by more than one person.

The two suspected killers, William Kistov Ramos and Pablo Ceaser Mamani, have been involved in numerous crimes over the past few years, including robbery.

A Peruvian journalist told Army Radio on Wednesday morning that, "When the police came to arrest them, one of the suspected murderers and a gang of his friends began to attack the policemen."

Peruvian President Allan Garcia declared Tuesday that authorities will do everything in their power to bring Shahak's murderers to justice and that when found, they will receive severe punishment.

Shahak served as an Army Radio broadcaster and producer during her compulsory IDF service. After her discharge from the army, Tamar worked for the web site "Walla" as a producer for its news service.

"I am shocked. She was an amazing, energetic, positive and friendly person, possibly the friendliest person I knew. I am simply shocked", said Rotem Dannon, who had previously worked with Tamar when he was the chief editor of Walla News.

In an interview with Army Radio, Shahak's boyfriend Daniel Zilbershtein explained that she had always dreamed of traveling to South America.

Zilbershtein added that his girlfriend's body was only identified when her parents described her tattoo to Peruvian detectives. According to him, Shahak's brother had left to go abroad but was called back home in the wake of his sister's reported murder.

The Israel Police confirmed Tuesday that Shahak's lifeless body had in fact been found dead in Peru. However, in order to pronounce her death officially police need obtain dental records from the IDF induction center. These samples were to be sent to Peru so as to enable officials there to pronounce a match between the body and the dental records.

Shahak's coffin was expected to arrive in Israel early Thursday morning and a burial ceremony was set to take place on Friday at 11:00 A.M.

Meanwhile, two thousand mourners on Tuesday showed support at the joint funeral procession of Daniella Aztmon, Adi Roseman, Ortal Dukas and Sivan Bodanditsk. The four girls were killed in a jeep collision in the southwestern Bolivian town of Uyuni. The funeral of Liran Mizrachi, a male victim, took place earlier in the day.

"God took your grandfather and was supposed to take me next", said Ortal Dukas' father at the funeral. "Children are meant to bury their parents, and not the other way around. At least I know that you left us with a smile on your face, and that your last moments on earth were happy. Take care of yourself and your friends in heaven."
