Bank of Israel Web site security was ignored for a year
By Lior Levy
Tags: Hackers, Security

The Bank of Israel regularly examines its internal computer and communications systems security - but for a year it never checked the security of its external Web site.

A little over two weeks ago, the bank's external Internet site was defaced by Arab hackers, and the bank shut it down for a short period to both repair the damage and examine its security operations.

This external, public site serves only to provide information to the public, and the attack caused little real damage - all the data was fully backed up, and the hackers did not gain access to any of the bank's operations. However, the attack did hurt the central bank's image, and the state's.

The site went back online a few days later. It is now being hosted on state-run servers, instead of the outside company that used to host it.

However, since the site went live again, it has been targeted in hundreds of hacking attempts from 15 different countries - the original hack seems to have made it a more attractive target.

The bank's internal network is completely separate from the external Web site, and is used for bank business, including very sensitive matters such as payments and transfers.

This internal network is extremely well protected, and is run through the state's Tehilla project for safe computing infrastructures.

The central bank hires an outside firm to attempt to breach its security on a regular basis, and switches these security firms every few months.

Nevertheless, the central bank's external server did not receive any special security attention.
