Boy's death in Lod fire may have been part of domestic dispute

Police are investigating whether a shed attached to the home where a 12-year-old boy died in a fire was torched as part of family violence against the mother.

The boy, Jawadat Ja'asus, died in the fire earlier this week in Lod. He had been sleeping in the shed.

Jawadat had been considered a high-risk case and was previously placed in an emergency social services shelter. But he was allowed to return home when his family objected to his being sent to a boarding school.

Social services first encountered the boy last July, when he was found wandering the streets of Eilat. He had moved to that city with his mother after she was threatened by relatives who accused her of provocative conduct and dress. Her husband, the boy's father, is serving a jail sentence for domestic violence.

Then 11, the boy was sent to an unnamed shelter in northern Israel and tried to jump out of the taxi to return to his mother. According to his case file, the mother discovered his whereabouts and sent two men there on a motorcycle, then went there herself to demand his release.

The case went to family court, where one of the boy's uncles promised to take care of him. The court-appointed guardian representing the boy also favored leaving him at home. The social workers decided it was pointless to insist on removing Jawadat from home, and the judge ruled in the family's favor.

Last November a municipal social worker met with the boy's uncle and his 6th-grade teacher, who reported he was struggling with schoolwork. Since then the authorities had not been in contact with him.

Welfare officials say that even if Jawadat had been sent to boarding school, he might still have been harmed on weekend visits home.

On the night of the fire he stayed home alone, while his mother and two older brothers went out.

Prison guards yesterday accompanied the father to see his son's grave.
