Getting the kids involved at your Independence Day barbecue
By Rachel Alagem
Burgers, kebabs, sauces and fruit skewers over the grill. Whoever said that children only need to eat the food during a celebration? They can also prepare it with our child-friendly recipes.

Easy to make meat sauces (marinate the meat for at least 4 hours):
1. Marinade ideal for spring chicken:
Crush two cloves of garlic and mix in a bowl together with the juice of one orange, two tablespoons of soy sauce, two tablespoons of honey, and two tablespoons of sweet chili sauce.

2. Chicken in cola can be easily transferred from an oven baking dish onto the barbeque grill:
1 cup of cola
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons ketchup
2 garlic cloves, crushed

Mix thoroughly, marinate the wings overnight; stuff yourself well during the day!

3. Although it is usually intended for parents, if you are blessed as I am, with an enthusiast of gourmet meat for a daughter, prepare a little for yourselves too
Red wine
Crushed garlic
Freshly ground black pepper
Rosemary

Mix the ingredients well in a bowl. Recommended for entrecote skewers.

Burgers:

Actually, if you think about it carefully, a burger or kebab is exactly like a ball of chocolate. Because we shape the meat into balls, there is no reason why the children won't want to stick their hands in the bowl and so... to work!

Ingredients:
500g minced mutton
Grated onion
1/4 punnet of mushrooms, grated
A generous amount of finely chopped parsley
Thickly-sliced bread, moistened and wrung out
A little olive oil and herbs (create your own concoction or add herb and spice mixes especially for burgers)

Preparation:
* Mix the ingredients together, place the mixture into the children's hands and tell them to roll it into balls
* Each ball needs to be pressed into a burger shape or made into kebabs, and placed onto the tray on the grill to be monitored by whoever volunteered to stand by the barbecue

To ease digestion but mainly your conscience, it's worth having a green salad somewhere in the vicinity too. The following salad can be prepared at the picnic site itself:

Sit the children down, wash their hands and instruct them - according to age - to tear lettuce leaves, chop tomatoes and toast a little garlic in the pan.

Pour over the following dressing, prepared in advance:
A little olive oil
A tablespoon of soy sauce
A tablespoon of honey
A pinch of salt

Dessert:
Melon, banana and apple on the grill:
Cut the fruit into large chunks (you can also use strawberries, tinned pineapple, pears or whatever you like), carefully skewer the pieces, spread with melted butter, orange juice and two tablespoons of honey and add to the grill.
If you managed to pack the cooler with vanilla ice cream and maple syrup too, well played. Bon appetit!
