Missing airman Arad's brother: State could've done more to free Ron
By Zohar Blumenkrantz, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Israel, Ron Arad, Lebanon

Chen Arad, the brother of missing airman Ron Arad, criticized the state Monday during a ceremony marking the navigator's 50th birthday.

"If the state thinks it is ok that someone needs to stay there so many years, the state needs to come out and say that, because that is their priorities," Arad said.

"If not, the state must act any way possible to make sure that does not happen."

Labor Minister Ami Ayalon took part in the ceremony, which was held at Ben Gurion Airport, along with Arad's family and friends from the air force.

At the end of the ceremony, a giant banner was taped onto a plane headed for New York that read "Ron Arad was born free 50 years ago."

Arad was abducted on October 16, 1986 by members of the Shi'ite militant group Amal after they shot his plane down over the Lebanese city Sidon.
