TV ?Survivor? running for mayor of Savyon?
Businessman Moshik Liftz, who recently participated in the hugely-popular Israeli version of the TV reality show ?Survivor,? may today announce his candidacy for the position of interim mayor of Savyon. The city?s nine-member council will today select a temporary replacement for former mayor Romemia Halevy-Segal, who passed away two weeks ago, to hold the position until municipal elections can be held. ?I haven?t decided yet,? Liftz, who is currently a council member and the chairman of the city?s budget and sports committees, said yesterday. Two other candidates are expected to submit their candidacies today: Deputy Mayor Moni Rubitzky and council member Avi Levi. (Yigal Hai)

majority of Germans - 53 percent - do not think their country has any special responsibility for Israel?s welfare, according to a survey conducted by German television station ZDF and released Saturday. ?The results show that there is a rift between the positions of the political leadership and public opinion in the German population,? said Israel Embassy representative Ilan Mor. The ?special relationship? between Israel and Germany began in the early 1950s, and implies a German responsibility for the State of Israel in light of the Nazi atrocities. (Assaf Uni)

Mom cries wolf, says baby left in stolen car
A Ra?anana woman set off a police search yesterday afternoon when she reported that her car had been stolen with her five-year-old son inside. Large numbers of officers fanned out to search the area and the media issued urgent calls asking for the public?s assistance in locating the vehicle. Police eventually found the car, with the child safe inside, on the next street over from where the woman thought she had parked it for a quick shopping errand. (Roni Singer-Heruti)

Ben-Gurion Airport gets a lot busier...
Passenger traffic at Israel?s Ben-Gurion International Airport increased by 11.5 percent between January and April 2008, according to Israel Airport Authority data released yesterday. The data also indicates an increase of 12.11 percent in the number of planes using the airport also occurred during 2008?s first four months. Some 24,251 takeoffs and landings were recorded between January and April, in comparison with 21,830 in the corresponding period last year. At the same time, the number of passengers boarding domestic flights dropped by 6.37 percent despite a 7.21-percent increase in the number of flights within Israel.(Zohar Blumenkrantz)

...but union threatens to take strike action
The Histadrut labor federation yesterday declared a work dispute with the Israel Civil Aviation Authority that could lead to a general strike at Ben-Gurion International Airport, Israel?s main gateway to the world. In a letter to Transportation Ministry Director-General Gideon Siterman, the Histadrut claimed agreements with the ICAA that promised union members benefits and raises have not been fulfilled. The agreements were part of a deal that ended a general strike last year. If the work dispute is not resolved within two weeks, the labor federation can declare a general strike that would paralyze incoming and outgoing commercial flights. (Zohar Blumenkrantz)
