Junior university faculty threatens to disrupt academic semester
By Haaretz Service
Tags: University strike

Junior university faculty members on Sunday announced their intentions to disrupt the academic semester as of next Sunday, after their negotiations with university representatives broke down.

The junior faculty is protesting the working conditions of the "temporary lecturers," who have a contract for only eight months, after which they are made redundant and receive no social benefits.

Representatives of the junior faculty have warned that there was "a real threat to the academic semester," which is slated to open next Sunday in most universities, after university heads rejected a compromise draft that had been prepared in recent weeks by junior faculty members and the Council for Higher Education.

The junior faculty's threats come only a few months after the senior faculty members ended their 90-day strike - the longest higher education strike in Israel's history, which had cost the state an estimated NIS 300 million.
