The bodies of five Israelis killed in a jeep collision in the southwestern Bolivian town of Uyuni are being flown to Israel on Saturday, and are expected to arrive on Sunday afternoon.

Their bodies were transferred on Friday to the Bolivian capital, La Paz.

The women killed have been identified as Daniella Aztmon, Adi Roseman, Ortal Dukas and Sivan Bodanditsk. The male victim, who joined the girls in the jeep as a last-minute replacement for one of their friends, was identified as Liran Mizrachi, 21, from Tel Aviv.

In an interview with Army Radio, Ortal's parents, Alon and Ilana Dukas, said they would like to have a joint funeral for the girls.

Ricardo Odler, president of the Jewish community in Bolivia, who arrived at the scene of the accident with Walid Manzoor, the Israeli ambassador to Peru, said, "It's difficult to imagine how this accident happened. We're talking about wide open desert, and it's unclear why the two jeeps collided."

Odler added that the victims' bodies have been under constant supervision by Jewish community leaders and members of the Foreign Ministry.

According to Israeli tourists traveling in other nearby vehicles, the accident occurred when the jeep driver inexplicably strayed from his path and hit another jeep carrying Japanese tourists, who were also killed.

The collision apparently caused an explosion in the jeep's gasoline tank, and the two vehicles went up in flames. The Israeli tourists added that they could not help because there were no fire extinguishers available.

The Israel Police has sent a forensics unit to Bolivia to assist identifying the victims.

"The Foreign Ministry and the department for Israelis abroad are in contact with the families," the ministry relayed.

Uyuni is a small town located in the southwest part of the country which sits at a distance of a 12-hour drive from the Bolivian capital. It is known as a tourist hotspot due to its proximity to the Salt Flats (also known as Salar de Uyuni), a desert composed primarily of salt.
