Five Israelis among 11 killed in road accident in Bolivia

Five Israeli tourists were killed on Friday in a road accident near the southwestern Bolivian town of Uyuni, the Foreign Ministry said.

The accident apparently occurred when two jeeps collided near the Bolivian capital of La Paz.

Four Israeli women, all 21-year-olds, and a young man, also in his 20s, were identified as having been killed of the crash.

A friend of the four women, Mor Elbaz, was saved from the accident at the last minute when she agreed to the young man's request to take her place in the jeep, after which she joined a group in a different vehicle.

The women killed were identified as Daniella Aztmon, Adi Roseman, Ortal Dukas and Sivan Bodanditsk. The name of the Israeli man killed in the accident, a Tel Aviv resident, was yet to be released on Friday evening.

The Foreign Ministry said it notified the families. Reports say that six Japanese tourists were also among the victims.

Word of the accident was leaked prematurely to the media, despite a Foreign Ministry request to keep mum until the families had been informed.

The Israel Police has sent a forensics unit to Bolivia to assist identifying the victims. The bodies of the fatalities will be transferred to Israel by a team from the Israeli embassy in Peru. There is no Israeli embassy in Bolivia.

The Foreign Ministry said Walid Mansur, Jerusalem's ambassador in Lima, hurriedly made his way to La Paz so as to make contact with local authorities handling the matter first-hand.

"The Foreign Ministry and the department for Israelis abroad are in contact with the families," the ministry relayed.

Uyuni is a small town located in the southwest part of the country which sits at a distance of a 12-hour drive from the Bolivian capital. It is known as a tourist hotspot due to its proximity to the Salt Flats (also known as Salar de Uyuni), a desert composed primarily of salt.
