Last update - 16:41 01/05/2008 Ex-kidnap victim: Austria's Nazi past contributed to abuse cases By The Associated Press Tags: Austria, abuse, kidnap  Former kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch has appealed for long-term support for the 42-year-old Austrian woman allegedly imprisoned and sexually abused in a windowless cellar by her father, Josef Fritzl. Kampusch told the BBC that Elisabeth Fritzl and her children would need time to recover. Police say Josef Fritzl repeatedly raped his daughter over 24 years and fathered her seven children. While Kampusch said that such abuse can take place anywhere, she suggested in the interview that Austria's Nazi past might have played some role. Advertisement "I think (abuse) exists worldwide, but I think it's also a ramification of the Second World War and its connection to education and so on," she said. She said that during the Nazi era the suppression of women was propagated. An authoritarian education was very important. Kampusch knows all too well what it is like to lose one's freedom. She was held in an underground cell for 8 years after being abducted while on her way to school. "Little by little, I realized there were parallels to my own fate," Kampusch told the BBC's Newsnight program. "So then the whole story affected me even more." Kampusch was 10 years old when she was kidnapped in Vienna in March 1998. Her abductor, Wolfgang Priklopil, confined her to a tiny underground cell in his home in a quiet Vienna suburb. He threw himself in front of a train hours after Kampusch's dramatic escape in August 2006. Kampusch has started a charitable organization to help the Fritzl family, and she said the best way to assist the children is to give them time to come to terms with their trauma. "They need a lot of silence. ... Time heals all wounds," she said.
