Sderot residents protest 60th celebrations in city
By Mijal Grinberg and Amos Harel

Residents of Sderot have started a petition meant to prevent Independence Day celebrations in the Qassam-battered city next week, in light of the rocket barrages fired in recent days by Palestinians from the nearby Gaza Strip.

Yossi Timsit, whose wife was seriously hurt when a Qassam struck their house over a year ago, announced he would sign the petition and urged all city residents to follow suit.

This petition "is going ahead because we are scared of living here," said Aharon Hugi, the chairman of the city' businesses union. "We cannot celebrate liberty in Sderot or in Israel because we are not really free." He called on Israelis to attend an alternative Independence Day celebration on Friday.

At the same time, another petition is being circulated, calling for the evacuation of all the people living in the town during the next week, in response to the ongoing firing of Qassam rockets on the town. The petition has already been signed by thousands of Sderot residents.

Nine rockets yesterday landed in and around the city yesterday. In the village of Ge'a next to Ashkelon, a woman was treated for shock when a Qassam rocket landed in her backyard.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak declared a closure on the West Bank yesterday for the duration of Holocaust Remembrance Day, in the wake of Military Intelligence warnings that Hamas was planning an attack.

Israel Defense Forces continued its investigation yesterday into the circumstances of an explosion that killed a mother and her four children in Beit Hanoun on Monday. The findings are expected to be submitted to Major General Yoav Galant, O/C Southern Command, within the next few days.

The findings will apparently support the army's initial inquiry, which claimed the intensity of the explosion was caused by explosives handled by Hamas in the area, which were ignited by Israeli fire. The collapse of the house that buried the Palestinians occurred from secondary blasts from explosives on bodies of Hamas men who were adjacent to it, the IDF said.

Footage of an explosion in the Gaza Strip taken from a drone may evince the army's claim, it said. However, there have been some difficulties proving the explosion in the footage is beyond a reasonable doubt the one that killed the family. (With reporting by Fadi Eyadat)
