Fugitive Israeli rapist caught in Ukraine with forged passport
By Tomer Zarchin, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: rape

The former deputy bailiff of the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court who fled the country after being convicted of various sex offenses - among them rape, sodomy, indecent assault, and sexual harassment - was apprehended by authorities in Ukraine two weeks ago.

David Peri was tried on three separate counts as cited in the indictment against him, including exploiting his authority against female employees under his charge, sexual harassment, indecent assault, rape, and sodomy.

In October 2007, the Be'er Sheva Magistrate's Court convicted Peri of rape-related charges, sodomy, indecent assault, and sexual harassment. Once Peri failed to appear before the court for a hearing, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Earlier this month, Peri was arrested in Ukraine after being caught with a forged passport. Authorities subsequently identified him as being wanted in Israel.

After receiving word of his arrest, the State Prosecutor's international affairs division, via Interpol and the Israel Police liaison in Eastern Europe, contacted the Ukrainian authorities with an official request to keep him under arrest.

Peri has been held in Ukrainian custody since April 15, and he will remain there pending an extradition request.
