Northern man jailed for duping people over magical powers
By Haaretz Service
Tags: Israel, Nazareth, Magic

Nazareth Magistrates Court on Tuesday sentenced a northern resident to four years in prison for duping people into believing he had magical abilities, and then robbing them of their money by pretending he was lifting curses.

Nimar Ramadan, the convicted con-man, was also fined NIS 500,000.

The indictment states that Ramadan would warn clients against fatal illnesses he said were threatening them and their relatives, and offered to "cure" them through amulets, blessings and other mystical measures.

In return, the clients paid him with money and jewelry worth over NIS 500,000.

In one of the cases, Ramadan told a woman that she and her children were cursed, and that her son and daughter would die of cancer while her son, a serving soldider, would die in the army.

For the northern resident to "lift the curse," the woman is said to have paid him NIS 200,000. She was forced to sell her apartment in order to raise this fund.

Nazareth Magistrates Court judge Lili Jung-Goffer said in her verdict that "the gravity of [Ramadan's] action speaks for itself." She added that "only rarely do we come across such vile and deplorable behavior.
