Hamas, other factions meet in Egypt to discuss cease-fire

A Palestinian official says 30 members of various factions are gathering in Cairo to hold talks with Egyptian mediators over finding a comprehensive truce with Israel and a measure of unity among the divided factions.

Mohammed al-Baba, a leading member of the Popular Resistance Committees says that the groups will meet Tuesday evening with Egypt's intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman.

Al-Baba, whose group has close ties with Hamas and other Palestinian factions, says that a prisoner swap involving the exchange of a number of Palestinians for abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit is also in the agenda.

Hamas have said before that it is ready for a six-month truce. Israel has
dismissed the offer, saying Hamas wants to use the lull to rearm after
sustaining heavy losses in recent fighting.

Livni, Egyptian FM to meet in London to smooth differences

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni is scheduled to meet her Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Aboul Gheit in London on Friday, in a bid to restore ties, a Jerusalem source said on Tuesday.

Livni and Gheit will attempt to bring ties to the level that existed before the two fell out over Egypt's alleged inability to halt arms smuggling into Gaza.

Cairo was angered earlier this year after Livni slammed Egypt for not acting decisively against arms smuggling into Gaza.

Ghiet said in response that "it is better for the Israeli minister to concentrate on negotiation efforts with the Palestinians, instead of speaking randomly about issues she should not be dealing with if she is not fully aware of the situation."

Since then, Israel and Egypt have been trying, at a low level, to resume their joint effort to halt arms smuggling into Gaza. About a month and a half ago, after an exchange of memoranda, Foreign Ministry Director-General Aharon Abramowitz and Livni's political advisor Tal Becker met with Egyptian officials in Cairo.

On Sunday, the bureau chief of the Egyptian foreign minister met with Livni and Foreign Ministry officials in Jerusalem, in an attempt to facilitate a meeting between the ministers during the donor states summit in London later in the week.

Livni and Gheit are expected to discuss the desired action against arms smuggling and the prospective re-opening of the Rafah border crossing. Livni is also expected to brief her colleague about the progress made in the peace process with the Palestinian Authority.
