The military said Monday that Israel Air Force Commander Major General Eliezer Shedi had ordered most of its advanced F-16I (Sufa) warplanes returned to duty, after it said tests had determined that dangerous levels of potentially carcinogenic formaldehyde in the oxygen supply of the aircraft has been limited to only a few planes.

All of Israel's F-16I fighters were grounded on March 20, after aircrew
complained about strange cockpit odors. Subsequent checks revealed that formaldehyde had leaked into the oxygen supply in some planes.

"The F-16I (Sufa) airplanes are returning today to active flying after it was proved that risk to the air crew members is extremely low," the IDF Spokesman's Office said in a statement.

"A thorough check that included all Sufa airplanes has discovered that only in seven planes the level of formaldehyde was higher than the international standard. In these planes there will be no future flights. In addition, a sample of all kinds of airplanes was checked and no similar problem was discovered," the statement said.

"Regarding the exposure of Sufa members to the formaldehyde material, it was discovered that risk is extremely low.
