Last week's report that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has offered to cede the Golan Heights in exchange for peace with Syria doesn't come as a surprise, historically speaking.

Olmert joins a tradition of prime ministers refusing to give up land for peace, only to change their minds in light of geopolitical realities.
