Walid Hamis: We want to be full partners in running the city. (Alex Levac) Last update - 16:13 27/04/2008 Israeli Arab to run for mayor of Haifa for first time since 1948 By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: Walid Hamis, Haifa, Hadash  Attorney Walid Hamis has announced that he is running for Haifa mayor, representing the first time an Arab candidate has run for the city's top post since 1948. Hamis, who served as Haifa's deputy mayor at the beginning of Mayor Yona Yahav's term, quit after the Second Lebanon War broke out. "Haifa's Arabs are not some candidate's vote reservoir. We want to be full partners in running the city," Hamis said. Advertisement Haifa's Arab voters have in the past tilted the balance in favor of Labor candidates - or whoever runs against the right. This was especially true in the last elections. Opposition to Hamis's campaign has been led by the Arab communist party Hadash, who have stated that it violates agreements reached by left-wing parties in the city to run under a unified banner for leadership of the city.
