Rightist Ben-Gvir blames police for Hebron clash with leftists
By Meron Rapoport, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service
Tags: Police, Hebron

Right-wing activist Itamar Ben-Gvir on Saturday accused Hebron police of "making possible the left-wing activists' provocation" which led to clashes earlier in the day in the West Bank town between settlers and leftist demonstrators.

Earlier Saturday, Hebron settlers attacked leftists on a protest march through the center of Hebron. According to the police, the settlers "tried to carry out a pogrom" on the demonstrators.

Ben-Gvir, however, charged that the leftists blocked the city's main road and did not allow Jewish traffic to move along it, as well as attacking a settler who was in need of medical treatment.

"If the situation had happened the other way around, police would have arrested them in good time. We don't deny that we pushed them and defended ourselves. Lawbreakers need to understand that we will not turn the other cheek for their behavior."

The incident occurred when a few dozen left-wing activists and Palestinians marched through the center of Hebron in protest against limitations the Israel Defense Forces have imposed upon the city, which they charged had emptied Hebron's center of Palestinians.

The demonstrators said that after they passed through Shuhada street, which has been closed to Palestinian traffic for five years, a group of settlers physically assaulted them, punching and kicking. According to the demonstrators, well-known right-wingers such as Itamar Ben-Gvir and others were among this group.
