IDF troops wound West Bank Palestinian trying to enter Israel

Israel Defense Forces soldiers late Saturday shot and wounded a Palestinian man after he attempted to cross the West Bank security fence into Israel near the settlement of Elkana.

Troops shot the man as he jumped up onto the fence, they had earlier called on him to stop and had threatened to shoot him if he did not do so. When the Palestinian did not respond to their calls, they shot and wounded him.

IDF soldiers subsequently took him for treatment in a hospital in Israel.

Earlier on Saturday evening, IDF troops caught two Palestinians who had infiltrated into Israel from the Gaza Strip near the Kissufim border crossing.

Security forces detained the pair, who were apparently unarmed, for questioning and to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

A short time earlier, IDF soldiers had hunted for the two men after having been alerted to a suspected infiltration from the coastal strip.

IDF troops searched the area near Kissufim, where the Palestinians were suspected of having crossed into Israel proper.

Residents of local Israeli communities were asked to be alert.

Palestinian militants have recently mounted a number of attacks on the coastal strip's border crossings with Israel.

Most recently, Hamas gunmen wounded 13 Israeli soldiers in a well-coordinated assault by explosives-laden vehicles against the Kerem Shalom crossing last Saturday.

Three days before the attack on Kerem Shalom, Palestinian gunmen killed three IDF soldiers from the Givati infantry Brigade in an ambush next to the Gaza Strip security fence. In another attack the previous week, Gaza terrorists killed two Israeli civilian workers at the Nahal Oz crossing's fuel depot.

These attacks came as Egypt was attempting to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, which rules Gaza.


Palestinians: 14-year-old girl killed in Gaza clashes
A 14-year-old Palestinian girl was killed Saturday during an IDF arrest raid in the town of Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian medics.

The apparent target of the raid was Hassan Marouf, a local Hamas leader. The fighting took place around his house, and IDF troops withdrew after detaining him, Hamas officials said. The army would not comment on Marouf's arrest.

His 14-year old daughter, Mariam, was killed by shrapnel from heavy machine guns, medics in Al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza said. Her mother was injured in the clashes.

Nine other Palestinians were also wounded in the fighting, three of them
critically, medics said.

An IDF spokeswoman refused to comment on the incursion but said the army carried out an air strike against armed militants in the area.

The clashes began before dawn Saturday when an Israel Defense Forces undercover force entered a border area. Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants fired at the force using machine guns, mortars and homemade bombs.

The IDF sent in dozens of tanks, and aircraft provided cover. Medics say the aircraft have launched five missile strikes since before dawn.
