Palestinian, Israeli activists scuffle with IDF troops in West Bank
By Meron Rappaport, Haaretz Correspondent

Two dozen Palestinian and Israeli protesters are scuffling with Israeli troops at an abandoned army post in the West Bank. The protesters say settlers have taken over the site and are setting up an illegal outpost there.

Thursday's incident began when Palestinians using a bulldozer near the post pushed aside two cement blocks they say have been blocking the road linking a West Bank village to the city of Ramallah. The protesters also climbed on a green shipping container. They tore down an Israeli flag and replaced it with a Palestinian one.

Troops tried to carry away the protesters and pushed several of them to the ground.

The military had no immediate comment.

The outpost was formerly an IDF base, and today houses a memorial to a former resident who was murdered in a terrorist attack.

Yonatan Polak, from "Anarchists Against the Wall" said that the operation was undertaken because the outpost "reflects the cooperation between the IDF and the settlers. If we are able to overtake this spot without any problems, then the army can do the same as well."

Polak added that shortly after they overtook the spot, IDF forces came to the area and began firing rubber bullets, some of which damaged a photographer's vehicle.

The IDF considers the area a closed military zone and has instructed the activists to leave.

Polak said in response that even if it is a closed military zone, there are still dozens of settlers who arrive to the spot nearly every day for prayers.
