IDF soldier jailed for posting sensitive photos on Facebook
By TheMarker
Tags: Israel, IDF, Facebook

A soldier from the elite Intelligence Corps unit "8200" was sentenced to 19 days in prison for uploading photos taken on his base without approval to the popular social networking site Facebook.

This is the first time the Israel Defense Forces has sentenced a soldier to military jail for an offense of this sort.

The Israel Air Force has recently instructed all servicemen under their command who are serving in sensitive units to remove any photos they may have uploaded to Facebook.

The IAF order does not apply to soldiers from the rest of the IDF, many of whom have uploaded photos taken during their army service, including pictures that show not only the units in which they serve, but also depict the soldiers deployed with highly sensitive or classified weapons platforms.

Disclosing information of this sort violates IDF regulations, but due to the rapid growth of the internet and social networking sites in recent years, it has been difficult for the IDF to put a stop to the phenomenon.

The Israel Defense Forces Spokesman issued a statement that said the incident in question was "known to us and will be dealt with severely in keeping with IDF regulations."

The Spokesman also said the IDF will take measures to educate soldiers about the dangers inherent in the "careless civilian use of the internet".
