Ex-Meretz leader Sarid says he won't run for Tel Aviv mayor

Former minister and Meretz leader Yossi Sarid said on Wednesday he would not run for Tel Aviv mayor in next November's municipal elections.

Sarid has recently said he contemplates running, but on Wednesday he announced he decided not to return to politics, merely two years after having retired.

"It's too soon for me," he said. "Had I announced my candidature today I would have had to renounce all my previous engagement, including teaching and writing, which are very important to me."

The current mayor, Ron Huldai, enjoys the sweeping support of the city council, when 29 of the 31 councilors are members of his Labor-led coalition. All major parties have yet to nominate a candidate for mayor even though the elections are due to take place in seven months' time.

Yaron Vered, a 53-year-old attorney, was the first to challenge Huldai when he announced about four months ago he would run against him. He has expressed interest in becoming the Likud candidate, but the party has yet to set up a nomination apparatus.
