Barbra Streisand pulls out of Israel 60th anniversary jubilee

Israel says Barbra Streisand has pulled out of a celebration of the country's 60th anniversary next month, citing personal reasons.

Streisand was one of the big-name guests slated to appear at a festive Jerusalem convention hosted by President Shimon Peres beginning May 13. The American diva was supposed to perform a rendition of the Hebrew prayer Avinu Malkeinu, or Our Father Our King.

But she notified the Israeli government two weeks ago that she would not be able to attend after all due to unspecified personal obligations, her spokesman Dick Guttman said.

"She celebrates as always the nation's courage and purpose and flourishing democracy, and is saddened that she cannot be there to do so in person," Guttman said in a statement, which described Streisand as "a devoted supporter of Israel since her earliest youth."

The anniversary convention's guest list still includes heads of state like U.S. President George W. Bush and technology czars like Google founder Sergey Brin.
