IDF kills militant leader wanted in plot to poison Ramat Gan restaurant

Israel Defense Forces troops operating in the West Bank killed a senior member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade accused of devising a recent plot to poison diners at a Ramat Gan restaurant.

The man killed was named as Hani Al-Kabi, the local commander of Al-Aqsa in the Balata refugee camp who together with about a dozen militants fled a Palestinian jail three months ago. The militants accused Israel of reneging on an amnesty deal by which they were supposed to serve time in Palestinian jail.

Meanwhile, Palestinian militants fired two rockets at the western Negev from Gaza on Friday, both of which struck open areas. There were no reports of casualties or property damage.

Gaza militants fired 17 rockets at Israel on Thursday, including a Grad Katyusha, none of which caused casualties. An improved Qassam rocket hit an open area near the southern town of Netivot, and a rocket launched toward Ashkelon caused the "Color Red" warning system to be sounded. Sderot and Kibbutzim bordering on the Gaza Strip were also targeted in the rocket attacks.

Kabi, the Al-Aqsa leader killed on Friday, was wanted for several attacks that were thwarted, including a recent attempted poisoning at a restaurant, and for a shooting in which two soldiers were wounded, the army said. Al Aqsa denied that Kabi was involved in the poisoning plot.

Witnesses said soldiers surrounded the Kabi's hideout in Balata and called on him to surrender.

He refused, and the troops opened fire on the building, witnesses said.

Kabi - whose group is an armed wing of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction - was killed, medical officials said. A member of another Palestinian faction, Islamic Jihad, was also in the building and was wounded and arrested.

An IDF spokeswoman confirmed there had been an operation in Balata in which one militant was killed and another captured. Troops arrested another 10 wanted militants in overnight raids on Nablus-area villages.

IDF forces frequently raid West Bank towns in search of militants suspected of involvement in attacks against Israelis.

The operation indicated an Israeli-Palestinian understanding on security in the city was unraveling.

Israel had earlier this year agreed to the deployment in the city of Palestinian security forces allied with moderate President Mahmoud Abbas. But IDF troops have continued to operate in the militant stronghold almost nightly.

Nablus is considered a test case for plans for further deployments of Palestinian forces around the West Bank.

On Thursday, IDF soldiers killed one Palestinian militant and wounded another near the Kerem Shalom Gaza-Israel border crossing, foiling an attempted infiltration and attack.

The renewed violence followed a day of fighting between IDF forces and Gaza militants that killed three Israeli soldiers and 21 Palestinians, including five children and a news cameraman.

Meanwhile, Israel has imposed a complete closure on the West Bank and Gaza for the duration of the Passover holiday.
