IDF foils attack near Gaza border
By Haaretz Correspondents and Agencies , By Yuval Azoulay, Yoav Stern and Yigal Hai

The Israel Defense Forces yesterday thwarted an attempted terror attack on the Kerem Shalom crossing into the Gaza Strip. Gunmen opened fire on the Israeli side of the crossing, but a patrol of Givati Brigade soldiers located nearby fired back, killing one gunman and wounding another, who fled with a third gunman into the Strip.

There were no injuries to IDF troops.

Sources in the IDF Gaza Division said yesterday the shooters were spotted in time by lookouts, making it possible to call in the patrol to prevent an attack. The crossing, used for agricultural produce and to send humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, was closed after the shooting until further notice.

Palestinians yesterday fired on Israeli fuel trucks at the Nahal Oz terminal, bringing kerosene to the Gaza Strip. No injuries or damage were reported.

The violence came as thousands of Palestinians marched through the streets of Gaza City for the funeral procession of Fadel Shana, a Reuters cameraman killed while covering Israeli-Palestinian fighting on Wednesday.

Some 12 Qassam rockets were fired yesterday at Israel, with no injuries. An upgraded Qassam rocket fell yesterday near Netivot, and two rockets were fired at Ashkelon. The Color Red alarm was sounded, but the rockets fell in open areas south of the city.

Meanwhile, in the West Bank, Islamic Jihad leader Balal Salah, 26, and his aide were killed yesterday by the IDF operating in the Qabatiya refugee camp south of Jenin. Weapons were found next to the body.

Fifteen Hamas activists were arrested in Nablus, and in Qalandiyah, north of Jerusalem, a weapons dealer and Fatah Tanzim activist was also apprehended.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak ordered a closure on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip for the entire Passover holiday, including the intermediate days (Hol Hamo'ed). The IDF said passage for Palestinians would be authorized only in humanitarian cases.

IDF soldier David Papian, who was killed Wednesday in a clash near Kibbutz Be'eri in the Negev near the Gaza Strip, will be buried today at 11 A.M. at the Mount Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem.
