News in Brief

The Jerusalem District Court yesterday rejected an appeal by MK Avraham Ravitz (United Torah Judaism) calling on the Jerusalem municipality to enforce laws against the public display and sale of leavened products during Passover. In rejecting the appeal, the court said Ravitz had appoached the municipality about the matter on Sunday and did not wait for its answer before turning to the court. The court also said Ravitz should have appended an affidavit corroborating his claims, for example that the city is insufficiently enforcing the laws. The court also rejected Ravitz's request that the court not publish the ruling so as not to increase public debate. (Ofra Edelman)

Shift managers at the Taba border crossing with Egypt have been instructed by Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz to broadcast the Counterterrorism Bureau's warning against travel to Sinai. Mofaz put the Israel Airports Authority on special alert in light of warnings of attempts to carry out terror attacks in Sinai and shootings at border crossings during the upcoming Passover holiday. IAA chairman Ovadia Eli convened a special meeting on the matter during Wednesday's monthly board meeting. According to IAA figures, 325,502 people passed through the Taba crossing in the first quarter of the year, 73.4 percent more than in the first quarter of 2007. (Zohar Blumenkrantz)

A Communications Minsitry search committee yesterday recommended that journalist Nitzan Chen be appointed chairman of the Council for Cable and Satellite Broadcasting. The committee, headed by ministry director general Mordechai Mordechai, interviewed 14 candidates over the past few weeks, among them journalist Yair Stern, and acting council chair Na'ama Henig. Chen, 44, has been a journalist with Channel 1 for nearly 20 years. If Communications Minister Ariel Atias accepts the recommendation, he will submit it to the cabinet for approval. (Asaf Carmel)

The High Court of Justice refused to hear an appeal by Jewish settlers in East Jerusalem against an order to seal up a house they had built illegally. The decision paves the way for the eviction of seven families living in Beit Yonatan, a seven-story building in the Arab neighborhood of Silwan. "After they have exhausted all legal means and political pressures they should be immediately removed to minimize the damage their presence is causing," Jerusalem City Council member Pepe Alalo said. The petitioners had argued that the order discriminated against Jews and that the city did not act against illegal Palestinian construction. Right wingers threatened to destroy all Palestinian houses build illegally if Beit Yonatan is sealed. (Meron Rapoport)
