State Comptroller to summon PM to testify in Pollard inquiry

State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss considers issuing a summons for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to give evidence in the Jonathan Pollard affair, Channel 2 reported on Thursday.

Pollard, a civilian intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy, was convicted of selling military secrets to Israel while working at the Pentagon. He was arrested in 1985 and pleaded guilty at his trial. He is serving a life sentence in a U.S. federal prison.

A few months ago, Lindenstrauss started compiling a report on whether Israel has been doing everything within its capacity to ensure the release the jailed spy. To this end, the Prime Minister's Office has provided documents and Cabinet Secretary Ovad Yehezkel has given evidence, but Olmert himself stands firm in his refusal to testify.

A PMO spokesperson said in response that all of the available material has been handed over to the comptroller, and that the prime minister has more important things than inquiries to attend to.

Last month Lindenstrauss criticized Olmert in what could be construed as accusing him of creating the impression that the inquiry into the government's conduct in the affair puts Pollard's potential release at risk.

Lindenstrauss said then: "If I'm wrong I'll be the first to admit it, and I wish I am, but someone here is behaving in a shady manner."

"The state comptroller has been carrying out the investigation for several months with the utmost secrecy and discreetness," he added. "None of its interim findings have come out of either the comptroller's bureau or the Knesset State Control Committee. And suddenly I read the newspaper and see something that is unthinkable."
