Court to postpone trial of Jerusalem mother suspected of child abuse

The Jerusalem District Court on Wednesday opened the trial of a Jerusalem woman suspected of abusing her children, but has decided to postpone the majority of proceedings until next month, following a request by the defense team.

The defense lawyer said her client was prepared to confess to some of the accusations.

At the defense's request, the trial will be postponed until the end of next month, until it has reviewed all of the investigative materials.

The woman is accused of assault and attacking a minor, suspected of abusing her eight children, including two aged 3 and 4.

The alleged incidents were uncovered about a month ago, when the woman's two toddler-age children were hospitalized in critical condition at the Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem.

Since then, the older of the two children's condition has improved and he has been released, though his younger brother remains comatose and in critical condition.

"We are aware of harsh beatings, freezing cold showers, seatings on burning ovens, extinguishing of cigarettes, whipping, and shaking," said a senior police source.

The woman, her husband and two other men were arrested immediately after the children were hospitalized. Since then, the father and another suspect have been released.

Police suspect that the abuse stemmed from the woman's participation in a religious cult that believes in "correcting" children while they are young.
