EU: Israel resumes supply of fuel to Gaza power plant
By The Associated Press

Israel allowed the resumption of European-funded fuel supplies for the Gaza Strip's only power plant on Wednesday, an EU official said.

The fuel has started to go through," said the official, hours after an attack by Hamas militants killed three Israel Defense forces soldiers near the Nahal Oz fuel terminal and put in doubt a promised resumption of deliveries.

Army spokeswoman Maj. Avital Leibowich had said the attack on the soldiers near the Nahal Oz fuel terminal prompted Israel to cancel plans to resume fuel shipments.

Israel cut off the flow of fuel to the Palestinian territory last week after Gaza militants killed two Israelis in an attack on the fuel terminal. The Defense Ministry said earlier this week it would renew fuel deliveries on Wednesday.

Kanan Abaid, deputy chairman of the Palestinian Energy Authority in the Gaza Strip, said Wednesday before pumping resumed the power plant only had enough fuel to operate until Saturday.

The EU official said the goal was to provide "as much [fuel] as can be possibly be pumped today" because the army had yet to tell the Europeans whether they would be allowed to make further deliveries to the plant on Thursday and Friday.

The plant supplies power mainly to residents of Gaza City and its surrounding areas, home to 800,000 people.

The drop in the supply of gasoline in Gaza has hampered travel for Gaza's 1.4 million people. Four Gaza universities shut down Monday after officials said students couldn't get to class.
