U.S. Jews urge Bush to boycott opening of Olympics over Darfur

The principal U.S. Jewish umbrella group for policy issues has urged President George Bush to boycott the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics over China's human rights record, particularly its support of Sudan in the light of atrocities in Darfur.

"By boycotting the opening ceremony of this year's Olympic Games, President Bush would send an unmistakable message that the United States does not and will not countenance genocide," said Andrea Weinstein, chair of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), whose member organizations include the American Jewish Congress, American Jewish Committee, the Anti Defamation League, and the parent bodies of Modern Orthodoxy and Conservative and Reform Judaism in the United States.

"In the spirit of the Olympics, China's close relationship with Sudanese President Al Bashir puts it in a unique position to help end the genocide in Darfur," Weinstein said in a statement.

"However, instead of advocating for peace, the Chinese government has allowed the atrocities in Sudan to continue."

The call came as Jewish activists in San Francisco pressed the case of Darfur as the Olympic torch was carried through the city. One of the demonstrators, novelist Michael Chabon ("The Yiddish Policeman's Union"), was quoted by JTA as saying "As a Jew, I'm passionately committed to the principle that there shouldn't be any more genocide."

"As part of a people that experienced the worst genocide the world has ever seen, my sense of outrage [over Darfur] was immediate."

JCPA called on Bush to "unequivocally state that he will not attend the opening ceremonies, unless China utilizes its unique leverage with the Sudanese government so that the hybrid UN-African Union peacekeeping force (UNAMID) is effectively deployed in the Darfur region by that date."
