J'lem mayor implores local businesses to avoid selling chametz

Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski on Tuesday implored city business owners to avoid selling "chametz" or leavened bread, during the Passover holiday.

"I don?t believe in coercion, I support discussion. I come to you with the request that this year we work together to preserve the local in Jerusalem of considering the sensibilities of the city's residents," Lupolianski said in a statement to local merchants.

Shas leader Eli Yishai on Tuesday announced that by 2009 it will be impossible to sell chametz, speaking only hours after the Attorney General ruled the state will not appeal a Jerusalem court's controversial decision to allow the sale of the foods by certain businesses during the Jewish holiday.

"The People of Israel can relax, by next year it be impossible to sell chametz," said Eli Yishai, who is Employment, Trade and Industry Minister as well as heading the ultra-Orthodox party.

Yishai added that the People of Israel will not change its ways because of the courts' "hallucinatory" ruling. "We will submit a bill, even if it goes against the government's position, to correct the situation - The ruling uproots Judaism," the minister said.

Earlier Tuesday, Attorney General Menachem Mazuz ruled that the state will not appeal the Jerusalem court's decision in April that Israeli law permitted the sale of chametz in grocery stores, restaurants and pizzerias as they were not considered "public" places by law.

Jerusalem Municipal Court Judge Tamar Bar Asher-Zaban determined that the businesses' selling of chametz does not fall under the "matzot" law which bans the public selling of the products forbidden by Jewish law.

Mazuz's position is that the matzot law is not designed to prohibit, and does not prohibit, the sale or consumption of those products during Passover, but only instructs the owners of businesses not to publicly present chametz products for sale or consumption.

The Jerusalem court's decision caused an uproar, with members of the religious parties issuing harsh condemnations of the court, as well as pushing for the immediate legislation of an amendment to the matzot law. Yishai on Sunday promised that his ultra-Orthodox party would continue to fight against the court ruling. "Shas will not give up on this even if it means going against the government," he said.
