AES, Mei Golan to build wind turbines farm
By Avi Bar-Eli

Mineral water company Mei Golan has reached a preliminary agreement with the U.S. energy giant AES for an equal partnership in a $600 million wind turbine project in the Golan Heights.

The plan calls for about 150 turbines with a total supply capacity of 380 megawatts, on a 140 sq.km. area in the north-eastern Golan Heights. AES has completed its due diligence of the proposed project, and within the next few days the partners will apply to the Electricity Authority for licensing for the project's first stage, which will produce about 200 MW of electricity, at an initial investment of about $330 million.

Mei Golan Wind Energy established the first and only commercial wind power station in 1992. The wind farm, located at Tel Assania, includes 10 turbines generating 6 MW. Its customers include the Mei Eden plant and the Golan Wineries. The remaining electricity produced, about 20%, is sold to the electrical grid.

Seeking a strategic partner to upgrade its aging turbines, Mei Golan contracted with AES to erect turbines between Majdal Shams and Alonei Habashan, mainly within privately owned orchards, half of which are in Jewish communities and half in Druze villages.
