A close shave for IDF brass in Gaza shelling
By Yuval Azoulay and Avi Issacharoff

Palestinian militants yesterday fired mortar shells at a group of top Israel Defense Forces officers - including GOC Southern Command Yoav Galant and Gaza Division commander Brigadier General Moshe Tamir - who were taking local authority heads from the South and the security officers of various organizations on a tour of the fence near the Gaza border.

There were no injuries in the attack, which took place in the fields of Kibbutz Nir Oz.

"One of the mortar shells landed some 20 meters from us," said an IDF official who participated in the tour, which included security officers from the Jewish National Fund and the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel. "We were evacuated to one of the shelters set up in the area only in the last few days."

The tour was part of a process of creating closer ties between the IDF and civil organizations operating in the south of the country, in light of the terror threats from the Gaza Strip, an IDF official said.

He said the gunmen may have specifically targeted the group of Israelis, who were standing a few hundred meters from the fence. Earlier this month, a Palestinian sniper fired at Canadians visiting an IDF post in northern Gaza and wounded Public Security Minister Avi Dichter's bureau chief.

Meanwhile, three Hamas operatives were killed in an explosion in a Hamas operative's home in the Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza yesterday, in what appeared to be an accident that took place while they were preparing explosives.

In the West Bank, gunmen attacked the Palestinian Authority governor of Nablus, Jamal Muhaisen. His bodyguards managed to get him into a house in the Balata refugee camp and exchanged fire with the gunmen. The Palestinian police removed him safely from the scene.
