Eilat schools shut down after teacher is attacked by student's mother
By Revital Levy-Stein, Haaretz Correspondent

Schools across Eilat closed down on Sunday, after one student's mother attacked the principal of the city's Goldwater High School, Neta Bezalel.

Schools will reopen Monday with homeroom classes.

The mother, angry that her son's test was postponed and that he would not be able to take it that day, spoke to Bezalel in the schoolyard and then proceeded to strangle her. Teachers watching the altercation then separated the two women, and the mother was subsequently arrested.

In the wake of the incident, Eilat Mayor Meir Yitzhak-Halevi decided to cancel high school studies in the city on Sunday, after consulting with Dr. Dror Ganiel, the head of Eilat's social and educational services. The Parent-teacher association supported the decision. Three thousand local high school students assembled for information sessions and were then sent home.

In recent years, the city of Eilat has undertaken a city-wide program called "A City Without Violence," which aims to bring into focus, especially in educational and community sectors, the factors that lead to violence. The program was adopted by the Public Security Ministry and by a number of authorities across the country. Despite the program's implementation, several extremely violent incidents, primarily between students, have taken place in recent years in Eilat's educational institutions.
