Shas irate as gov't overlooks debate on Pesach chametz ban
By Mazal Mualem, Haaretz Correspondent

Shas ministers are fuming that their party's amendment barring the sale of chametz (leavened bread) went undiscussed by the government Sunday due to a technical glitch that prevented the proposal from being delivered on time.

MK Itzhak Cohen presented the amendment, which would forbid the sale of all chametz during Passover, to the government secretary on Wednesday.

"Apparently someone in the government office prevented the proposal from being discussed," said Cohen on Sunday. "More than 85 percent of the population supports the ban on chametz sale in public places."

Some two weeks ago, a Jerusalem court allowed grocery stores, restaurants and pizzerias to sell chametz on Passover.

Shas leader Eli Yishai promised that his party would continue to fight against the court ruling allowing the sale of chametz during Passover. "Shas will not give up on this even if it means going against the government," he said.

MKs Meir Sheetrit and Ze'ev Boim, meanwhile, said that the government should not interfere in court rulings.

Last week, Yishai called the Jerusalem court's ruling a " black stain on Israel's Jewish identity."
