The Israel Defense Forces' top officer in the south on Sunday narrowly escaped being hit by a salvo of mortar shells fired by Palestinian militants in Gaza.

Mortars landed only meters away from GOC Southern Command Yoav Galant, who was on a tour of Sderot and kibbutz Nir Oz. The mortar strike caused neither casualties nor property damage.

Galant was accompanied on the tour by Haim Yalin, the head of Eshkol Regional Council. Yalin told Haaretz that, "during the tour a salvo of three mortar shells was fired, which struck 20 meters away from us."

Yalim said the group came to the site in order to coordinate military activities in the agricultural areas of Kibbutzim Ein Hashlosha, Nir Oz and Nirim, all of which border on the Gaza Strip.
