Galilee village resident, 27, murdered at entrance to home

Anonymous gunmen fatally shot a 27-year-old resident of Bana, near Carmiel, as he entered his home early Sunday morning.

The gunmen shot Bassem Kassem Bakri in the torso, wounding him fatally, and he later died en route to the hospital in Nahariya.

Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder. Northern District police spokesperson Superintendent Eran Shaked said that the victim was known to police and that a criminal dispute led to the killing.

Following the incident, police sent forces to the Arab Galilee village from the Northern District unit headed by Commander Menachem Hever.

The murder comes 24 hours after the hurling of two explosive devices in the nearby town of Dir al-Assad, which damaged property. Police have arrested suspects in relation to this incident as well.

Residents of the two towns, which along with Majdal Krum form the city al-Shagur, have begun to feel less safe. The tossing of explosive devices and grenades on homes and other property is a common occurrence in the city.

Carmiel station Chief Superintendent Rami Neimark admits that the situation in the community has grown "intolerable." According to Neimark, the dispute was over land in the Bana case, while the Dir al-Assad incident is a result of the ongoing conflict between the Assadi and Musa clans.

Police said that violence levels have increased drastically of late. "We are talking about a group of people who have taken the law into their own hands," said Neimark. "We will work against them, and in the end, they will be behind bars."

But residents of the three towns have their own criticism against the police. "Crime has become a common occurrence and the police do little to deter the factors and criminals responsible," said one resident Sunday morning. "I don't know if the police would allow this level of crime and violence in the adjacent town of Carmiel."
