Police arrest man suspected of letting preteen son drive car on highway
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Israel, Galilee

Shfaram Police on Friday arrested a man on suspicion of letting his 12-year-old son drive his car.

The arrest came after a police patrol car noticed a private car moving in a strange fashion along Highway 70 near the Galilee village of Tamra. It appeared to the officers that no one was in fact driving the vehicle.

Police subsequently rushed to stop the car, and to their amazement discovered it was actually being driven by a 12-year-old boy. The officers were then further astonished to see the boy's father sitting next to him, and his mother sitting behind him with two other children on the back seats.

Chief Superintendent Haim Rahamim, the commander of Shfaram's police station, relayed that an initial investigation revealed that the father's driver's license had been invalidated some two years ago. The father had apparently let his son drive the family from the house to a nearby restaurant, where they were to eat lunch.

The father was held at Shfaram police station and his car was sequestered. Police stressed that he will be tried in an accelerated judicial process due to an outstanding suspended sentence he has for grave traffic violations.
