Universities offer to begin talks with junior faculty threatening strike
By Ofri Ilani

The Committee of University Heads announced on Thursday that they are interested in embarking on comprehensive talks with the junior lecturers union concerning the terms of their employment.

The union said last month that it planned to initiate work stoppages, affecting class schedules, as a result of what it saw as a lack of progress in efforts to settle the junior lecturers terms of employment.

"There is genuine concern about the smooth progress of the second semester," union representatives announced.

The second semester is scheduled to begin in May, several months after the end of the senior faculty's strike, which severely disrupted studies in the 2007-2008 academic year.

Dr. Eli Leher, who heads the forum coordinating the junior faculty, said in response that "we welcome the CUH for their decision to negotiate after months [of] ignoring [such requests]. We are ready for expedited talks, also during the Pesach holiday, and we hope that the CUH are not merely trying to wash their hands and gain time."

The agreement which concluded the senior faculty strike did not include the junior lecturers, who perform much of the brunt of teaching. Most of them are employed as "external staff," receiving an hourly salary, and are paid only for eight months of the year. They also do not receive a pension plan, or any social or academic benefits, such as eligibility for a sabbatical.
