IDF commando killed in Gaza
By Yuval Azoulay

An Israel Defense Forces soldier from the Egoz commando unit, Staff Sergeant Sayef Bisan, 21, was killed in action before dawn yesterday in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

Bisan was part of a routine search operation in a neighborhood east of Khan Yunis and about a kilometer from the perimeter fence. On reaching the target, the IDF soldiers were ambushed and came under heavy fire, including mortar shells. Bisan was hit in the first wave of fire, was critically wounded and later died of his injuries. Two other soldiers were lightly wounded, and were hospitalized at the Soroka Medical Center, Be'er Sheva.

Bisan was laid to rest yesterday afternoon in his village of Jatt, in the Western Galilee.

The incident occured at 3 A.M., about an hour after the troops had entered the general area on foot from Israel.

Israel Air Force helicopters were called in and fired at armed militants.

An IDF source said that the purpose of the operation was to hit terror infrastructure in the area without being exposed, as in similar operations conducted frequently.

The targeted neighborhood is considered a "viper's nest" of terrorists, from which numerous terror activities emerge, including mortar attacks, planting bombs, monitoring IDF troop movements, and sniper fire aimed at farmers and soldiers in the fields of Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha.

The Golani Brigade's Egoz special forces unit has carried out many operations of this kind in recent months, some of which were not made public.
