Last update - 00:08 10/04/2008 Gunfight erupts on central Tel Aviv street during jewel heist By Yigal Hai, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: Tel Aviv, armed robbery Tel Aviv's Pinsker Street became a battleground Wednesday when two armed robbers, planning to steal jewels, ran into one brave salesclerk and two determined city inspectors. At approximately 6:30 P.M., one of the assailants entered a jewelry store on the central Tel Aviv street, and tried to rob the store owner at gunpoint. The 38-year-old owner struggled with the assailant, and the latter fired an accidental shot which smashed the store's window, allowing the assailant to flee. However, upon escaping from the store, the would-be robber faced another obstacle - two city inspectors noticed the commotion and began chasing him. The suspect opened fire at the two inspectors, who managed to dodge the shots. Advertisement The robber's accomplice, who was waiting in a getaway vehicle, tried to run the inspectors over with the car. One of the inspectors smashed one of the car windows in response. The accomplice began driving away, but the inspector chased him on a motorcycle while simultaneously reporting the incident to the police. Patrol police officers from the Tel Aviv station arrested the gunman after a short pursuit. Eventually, the accomplice was also arrested. No one was hurt in the incident.
